Step 1
Once we have identified your horse's unique allergy profile through intradermal testing our first step is to determine which allergens to include in immunotherapy protocol. Allergens which show a big response from your horse's immune system are top of the list. If there are more than 15-18 allergens identified the veterinarians at Springhill Equine will choose the worst offenders first and then work own from there.

Step 2
Once the protocol for your horse has been customized by Dr. Lacher and Dr. Bourke a prescription is formulated in three separate concentrations. Your horse will be started on an injection protocol using the lowest concentration first. We start with a small dose of 0.1 cc using tiny needles. The dose is slowly increased every other day. Following each injection your horse should be monitored for a large hive or any itching or redness at the site of the injection. This reaction is uncommon with the lowest concentration vial.

Step 3
Your horse graduates to the middle concentration vial. You will again drop back to the lowest dose of 0.1cc and gradually increase every other day. At this point it is important to monitor for any signs of reaction. The most common response is a large hive at the site of the injection for longer than 24 hours. Once any type of prolonged reaction occurs we will begin to work out a maintenance protocol. If your horse continues through this vial successfully you can continue on to the next step.

Step 4
Now you are on the strongest concentration. Once again you will start at 0.1cc and increase every other day. Again close monitoring for a prolonged or significant reaction to the immunotherapy injection is key to beginning the maintenance protocol.

Step 5
Your horse has a hive which has lasted longer than 48 hours or has been itching the injection site. Once this happens we begin determining where your horse's maintenance level of therapy will be located. This starts by going back to last dose before your horse reacted and gradually spacing out the days between injections until allergic symptoms return. At this point we recommend calling Springhill Equine and discussing a maintenance protocol with Dr. Lacher or Dr. Bourke.
